The story
Built 1863-1880 with Marseille bricks and stained glass, the basilica anchors Paris Commune Square. A long restoration has kept the interior mostly closed, but the exterior, the Virgin Mary statue, and the surrounding square remain a gathering point day and night.
Even mid-restoration, the cathedral square is the postcard center of old Saigon — stand where Paris meets the tropics, with the Post Office one side and coffee streets the other.
Local tips
The best photo angle is from the small coffee stools across the square in the early morning, before traffic builds.
