The story
Built by Cantonese migrants around 1760 and rebuilt in the 1800s, Thien Hau honors Mazu, protector of seafarers. Worshippers hang coiled incense that burns for weeks; the courtyard light through the smoke is at its best in mid-morning.
The porcelain dioramas on the roof and the giant hanging incense spirals shot through with skylight beams make this the most photogenic temple in the city — and the gateway to exploring Cho Lon.
Local tips
Look up: the ceramic figurines along the roof ridge tell full opera scenes. Then walk 10 minutes to Binh Tay Market.
