The story
Funded by Chinese merchant Quach Dam in the 1920s, Binh Tay's pagoda-style architecture houses over 2,000 stalls selling dried goods, spices, homewares, and textiles in bulk. The central courtyard and the food stalls around the edges are the visitor highlights.
This is what Ben Thanh was before the tour buses: a working wholesale market under a gorgeous clock-tower courtyard, where nobody performs for tourists because everybody is busy actually trading.
Local tips
Buy dried fruit, tea, and spices here at a fraction of Ben Thanh prices; the courtyard shrine to the founder is easy to miss.
