The story
Ngo Dong Xuan is a narrow food alley about 200 m long beside Dong Xuan Market, entered from Hang Chieu. There is only room for a single row of tables, so you squeeze past diners as you walk. Many vendors have been there for decades. You can graze through Hanoi snacks here: shrimp and sweet potato fritters, snail noodle soup, dried-beef papaya salad, pho tiu and nearly 20 kinds of che.

When to go
Stalls get going around 10:00, and the busiest time is 11:00–13:00. Stalls close when the market closes, so go before about 17:00; the fried-dough stall opens in the late afternoon.
Getting there
Park outside and walk in from Hang Chieu; the alley is too narrow for bikes.
