The story
The heart of the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker quarter, Bui Vien closes to traffic on weekend nights and becomes a wall-to-wall corridor of bars, clubs, shisha lounges, and street vendors. Quieter craft-beer bars hide in the side alleys for when the main drag gets too much.
It is loud, chaotic, and absolutely not sophisticated — and that's the point. One night on a plastic stool with a cheap beer watching Bui Vien's circus go by is a Saigon rite of passage.
Local tips
Keep your phone zipped away and agree on drink prices from the menu, not verbally. The street peaks from 22:00.
