The story
Me Tri, in Nam Tu Liem, is a Hanoi village where families have made com (young green sticky-rice flakes) for more than a century. The craft is recognised as national intangible cultural heritage. The rice is threshed, dried, roasted for over two hours, then pounded and sifted into soft, fragrant green flakes, and traditionally wrapped in lotus leaf and tied with rice straw. About 50 households still keep the craft, and they also make com cake, com patties, sticky rice with com and com sausage.
Me Tri com (young green rice flakes) belongs to Hanoi's recognized food culture. It is strongly seasonal, so timing matters.
The com craft in Me Tri is more than a century old. About 50 households kept it going as of 2024, and 6 families have recently returned to it.

Local tips
Go in autumn, the main com season.
Good com is chewy and fragrant, never burnt-smelling or raw; roasting is the step makers watch most closely.
Com products are also sold across Hanoi, including as souvenirs at Noi Bai Airport, if you can't reach the village.
