The story
Bat Trang is a ceramics village with about 700 years of pottery history, around 13–15 km south-east of the Old Quarter. The village is free to enter: you can walk the old alleys, browse the big ceramics market, and see working kilns. Workshops let you shape a pot on the wheel with an instructor guiding you, or paint a ready-made piece. The village's feast-cooking knowledge was listed as national intangible heritage in 2025.

Local tips
Workshops can fire and glaze your piece (firing fee about 40,000–60,000₫) and have it ready for pickup or shipping in 5–7 days; international shipping costs about US$15–30 extra, so ask before you start.
Check pieces for cracks and chips before you buy at the market; bargaining is normal.
Wear comfortable shoes for the unpaved and brick surfaces.
Children pay less at some workshops (e.g. 50,000₫ at 'I am an Artisan'), which makes it an easy family half-day.

When to go
Arrive at 8:00–9:00 or after 14:00 to avoid tour groups. The market is open about 7:30 (summer) or 8:30 (winter) to 17:30. The village festival runs on the 14th–16th of the 2nd lunar month.

Getting there
A Grab car takes about 30–40 minutes and costs around 150,000–200,000₫ each way. Bus 47A (Long Bien – Bat Trang market, about 10,000₫) can take up to 90 minutes. Some river tours also stop here.
