The story

Bac Ha's market convenes only on Sundays and is described as very crowded and the largest market in the highlands. It draws Hmong (Flower and Red), Dao, Tay, Nung and other ethnic groups. Besides the textile stalls there is a livestock area where buffaloes and horses are traded, and food stalls serve thang co, Bac Ha's signature stew, with local corn wine.

Bac Ha is not in Sa Pa itself, but its Sunday market is a strong regional day trip in Lao Cai. It is a real drive from Sa Pa, so leave early.

Getting there

This is a long day trip: sources put Bac Ha about 95–135 km from Sa Pa (2+ to 4 hours by road depending on route), and about 60–70 km from Lao Cai city. Some guides suggest arriving Saturday evening and staying in Bac Ha to be at the market early. Watch for fog early in the morning, use low gears on descents and avoid driving after dark.
